Bait Fishing: Jamie prefers to use native bait, and whether it is live or freshly frozen, you can be assured it will usually result in a hook up. Daintree River sardines are a favorite with most fish species, particularly over the winter season. Native prawns like banana or greasies are favorites over the pre and post wet periods. Jamie’s net casting techniques are unique to him and beautiful to watch.
Minimal time is spent casting for bait on most charters, so more time can be spent fishing. Prime barramundi bait in the post and pre wet seasons are Daintree River yabbies, or cherabin. In the hot clear weather leading to the wet season, the water in the Daintree is clear enough in the upper reaches of the Daintree to view schools of tarpon and permit snuffing cherabin from the base of the weed beds.
Offshore fishing using bait , the same Daintree river sardines, as well as good quality calamari squid, mullet, pilchards, or small reef species like blue fusiliers are optimum for Spanish mackerel, coral trout, nannygai to name just a couple.
Fly Fishing: Depending on the season, fly fishing, combined with skill can result in the unexpected. Jamie recommends 8-9 weight outfits for most situations in the Daintree River, with 10-12 weight outfits suiting offshore surface and demersal species. Lighter outfits can produce the species required for personal checklists. Most experienced fly fishers have their own preferred outfits and kits to test out most tropical species.
Jamie will guide you to the most potential spots for a particular species, then skill, patience and luck is in the fly fisher’s hands. Jamie provides basic but capable and proven outfits for the fly fisher that chooses to leave their favorites home.
Lure fishing; Luring in the Daintree area is always exciting. Artificial fishing with soft plastic’s and hard bodied lures is catered for, more so on specialised charters.
Popper gulping GT’s, reef jack’s, and coral trout offshore, soft plastic sucking tropical flathead, lure banging barramundi and mangrove jack in the Daintree River are just a few species that can be seen with artificial baits.
Fast action and lively jigs usually provide a variety of species offshore. Deep water species such as Spanish mackerel, trevally, and nannygai give the lure enthusiast a thrilling challenge right up to when the fish is boated.
